2. You enter a 'control room' and connect to your 'robotic figure' (via wireless signal?).
3. You control the Avatar using your mind.

"Up in the Air," "Precious" and "Inglourious Basterds" led the Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nominations each Thursday, among them honors for George Clooney, Diane Kruger and Mo'Nique.

The World War II rewrite "Inglourious Basterds" and the Harlem story "Precious: Based on the Novel `Push' By Sapphire" are competing for the guild's overall cast prize, along with the 1960s British drama "An Education," the Iraq War tale "The Hurt Locker" and the musical "Nine."

The corporate-downsizing tale "Up in the Air" was shut out of that category but scored a lead-actor nomination for Clooney as a frequent-flyer whiz and two supporting-actress slots, for Vera Farmiga as his new love and Anna Kendrick as his new protege.

Kruger picked up a supporting-actress honor as a German movie star and Allied spy in "Inglourious Basterds," which also earned a supporting-actor slot for Christoph Waltz as an exuberantly ruthless Nazi.

"Precious" earned a lead-actress honor for Gabourey Sidibe as an illiterate, abused teen determined to make a better life. Mo'Nique was nominated as supporting actress as the teen's despicable mother.

For best actor, Clooney is up against Jeff Bridges as a boozy country singer in "Crazy Heart," Colin Firth as a grieving gay academic in "A Single Man," Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela in "Invictus" and Jeremy Renner as a daredevil bomb technician in "The Hurt Locker."

Along with Sidibe, nominated for best actress are Sandra Bullock as foster mom for a future NFL star in "The Blind Side," Helen Mirren as the wife of Leo Tolstoy in "The Last Station," Carey Mulligan as a teen involved with an older man in "An Education," and Meryl Streep as chef Julia Child in "Julie & Julia."

Besides Waltz, supporting-actor picks are Matt Damon as a South Africa rugby player in "Invictus," Woody Harrelson as a military next-of-kin notifier in "The Messenger," Christopher Plummer as aging author Tolstoy in "The Last Station" and Stanley Tucci as a serial killer in "The Lovely Bones."

The choices lined up much the same as Tuesday's Golden Globe nominations. Last year's drama cast winner, "Mad Men," is nominated again, along with "The Closer, "Dexter," "The Good Wife" and "True Blood."

The SAG Awards will be handed out Jan. 23.

The guild prizes are a prelude for what actors might take home at the Academy Awards. Three of the four guild recipients last year — Sean Penn for "Milk," Heath Ledger for "The Dark Knight" and Kate Winslet for "The Reader" — went on to win Oscars. Most members of the academy's acting branch are also members of SAG.

"Slumdog Millionaire," which earned the guild's cast honor, wound up dominating at the Oscars, winning best picture and other key awards.

Tennessee Snaps Quarterback Matt Simms

Quarterback Matt Simms, the son of former NFL star Phil Simms and younger brother of ex-Texas QB Chris Simms, has signed a letter of intent to play at Tennessee, a source inside the Volunteers program has confirmed to ESPN.com.

Wednesday is the first day this year when junior college prospects can sign with four-year colleges and Simms, who began his college career at Louisville, comes to UT via El Camino College in Torrance, Calif. He is a midyear recruit, meaning he will begin classes in Knoxville in January and be able to go through spring practice.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Simms has two years of eligibility remaining and will compete with Nick Stephens for the vacated QB job since Jonathan Crompton will finish up his career for the Vols in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Also expected to battle for the starting QB job is Tyler Bray, a 6-7 quarterback recruit who is committed to UT and set to arrive at Tennessee next month.

Simms took an official visit to UT two weekends ago.

In 2009, he completed 159 of 269 passes for more than 2,200 yards and 17 TDs in a season that was shortened when he broke his hand in the second-to-last game. Simms had surgery on the hand and has already had a pin taken out of it and is scheduled to resume throwing next week. He will come to Knoxville with El Camino teammate Kenbrell Thompkins, a Miami native touted to be one of the country's top junior college receivers.

In his high school career in New Jersey, Simms passed for more than 6,000 yards and 60 touchdowns during his career.

Borromean Rings Theory Proved After 40 Years

40 years ago, physicist Vitaly Efimov predicted a quantum-mechanical version of Borromean rings, a symbol that first showed up in Afghan Buddhist art from around the second century. The symbol depicts three rings linked together; if any ring were removed, they would all come apart.

Efimov theorized an analog to the rings using particles: Three particles (such as atoms or protons or even quarks) could be bound together in a stable state, even though any two of them could not bind without the third. The physicist first proposed the idea, based on a mathematical proof, in 1970. Since then, no one has been able to demonstrate the phenomenon in the lab — until now.

A team of physicists led by Randy Hulet of Rice University in Houston finally achieved the trio of particles, and published their findings in the online journal Science Express.

"It was very exciting, because after 40 years of this prediction being out there, it was finally verified," Hulet told LiveScience.

Hulet presented his work at a meeting in Rome in October that Efimov also attended.

"He gave me a high five after my talk," Hulet recounted. "He was so enthusiastic and so excited to see this prediction become true."

Efimov had calculated that the triplet of bound particles was possible, and that it was repeating: New bound states could be achieved at higher and higher energy levels in an infinite progression. All of the bound states would occur at energy levels that were multiples of 515.

To prove that they had really created the trios, called Efimov trimers, the researchers produced one set of three lithium atoms bound together, and then reproduced it with a binding energy 515 times the first one. (Essentially, binding energy indicates how tightly the particles hold onto one another and how much energy it would take to pull them apart.)

The researchers used a setup called a Feshbach resonance that allowed them to tweak the energy levels of their atoms. They found that when they hit multiples of 515, the particles would bind, but at other energies they wouldn't, proving that the trios really were Efimov trimers.

"It's an amazing effect, really," Hulet said. "A lot of people didn’t believe [Efimov] at first. It was a very strange prediction."

The theory is unique because it's a solution to a special case of what's called the "three-body" problem. Scientists have solved the "two-body" problem — that is, they have calculated exactly how two objects should move based on their starting positions, masses and velocities. Scientists can also calculate this scenario for many masses, but a pure solution to the general three-body problem has been elusive.

"Physicists can handle two-body problems quite well, and many-body problems fairly well, but when there are just a few objects, like the three bodies in these Efimov trimers, there are just too many variables," Hulet said.

The Efimov calculation isn't the solution to the general case, but rather a solution to a specific case of three bodies. Thus, discovering a real-life example of three particles fulfilling his prediction is an important step to learning more about the three-body problem.

150th birthday of LL Zamenhof

Polish physician and oculist Lejzer Ludvig Zamenhof created the international artificial language Esperanto. Working under the pseudonym of Doktoro Esperanto he published a textbook, Lingvo Internacia in 1887. His pseudonym, Esperanto ("who hopes") became the language’s name. Although his name appears on the occasional list of famous freemasons, the National Grand Lodge of Poland has no record of his initiation and there is no documentation to suggest that he was ever a member.

Born on December 15, 1859 in Bialystok, Poland, L.L. Zamenhof spoke his father's native language of Russian and his mother's Yiddish. There were not many languages that Zamenhof did not learn.

He eventually learned Polish, German, French, Latin, Greek, Hebrew and English. Zamenhof also studied Italian, Spanish and Lithuanian.

What led Zamenhof to learn so many languages probably derived from what caused him to create the international language of Esperanto. As a child growing up, Zamenhof observed the feuding among the different ethnic groups that lived in Bialystok. See how multilingualism brings communities together.

The Poles, German and Belarusians that live in Bialystok were constantly quarreling. Zamenhof believed that a common language among the different groups would stop the misunderstandings.

As a student at a Warsaw secondary school, Zamenhof made his first attempt to create an international language. It was very complex and the grammar was rich.

After studying English, Zamenhof began to simplify the grammar in his new language. Zamenhof first project, "Lingwe uniwersala" was almost completed by 1878, but he was too young to publish it.

Zamenhof began to study medicine and graduated in 1885 after graduating from the secondary school. Zamenhof worked as a doctor while he continued to work on his new language.

Zamenhof obtained the money to publish his booklet on his new language from his future father-in-law. The booklet titled; Lingvo internacia Antauparolo kaj plena lernolibro (translates to International Language Foreward and Complete Textbook) was published in 1887. Zamenhof used the pen name, Doktoro Esperanto" or Doctor Hopeful.

The new international language was more than a communication tool for Zamenhof. His objective for it was to help promote peace among different cultures.

The L.L. in Dr. L.L. Zamenhof is referred to mean Ludovic Lazarus. He was actually given the Yiddish name Leyzer (translated from the Hebrew name of Eliezer)at birth.

Zamenhof used both Leyzer and the Russian equivalent Lazar as an adolescent. Then he began using the Russian name Lyudovik while studying medicine at the university.

Like L.L. Zamenhof, his brother Leon became a doctor and started signing his name Dr. L. Zamenhof. So Zamenhof began signing his name Dr. L.L. Zamenhof in 1901.

The interesting facts about his name does not stop with Zamenhof's two Ls. His last name Zamenhof is the Esperantized spelling of his family name. His family name is of German decent and is actually Samenhof.

L.L. Zamenhof died on April 14, 1917. Before he died he created the international language Esperanto that is still in use by some today. Esperanto has never been adaptive as a country's language, but some relief groups and even the military use it.

Today on his 150th birthday, Google has introduced many to Dr. L.L. Zamenhof and his language Esperanto. The Google doodle features the Esperanto flag as its L. Maybe one day the world can all speak in peace as he once dreamed.

Wendy Maldonado: Aaron Maldonado Hurts Me Every Day of My Life

Who is Wendy Maldonado? Did she really killed her husband?

This is the news from NYTimes.

Minutes after smashing her husband’s skull with a hammer, Wendy Maldonado of Grants Pass, Ore., called 911. The operator asked: Did he try to hurt you? Ms. Maldonado replied: Every day of my life.That answer — in its full form, including a word you won’t hear on television outside of premium cable — is the title of an hourlong documentary Monday night on HBO. The channel is promoting the film as a study in domestic violence, but what’s best about it is that it treats the subject obliquely. It’s really a study in character and tragic circumstance, one that poses questions about justice and human nature but doesn’t reach for answers.

It’s telling that HBO imposed the new, more provocative title, with its emphasis on abuse, and jettisoned the director Tommy Davis’s original title: “One Minute to Nine,” a reference to Ms. Maldonado’s last minute of freedom before being sentenced in her husband’s death.

Aaron Maldonado died that night in 2005, and Ms. Maldonado and their 16-year-old son, Randy, who participated in the killing, were arrested. Rather than face jury trials for murder, they accepted plea bargains that sent Randy to jail for 75 months and his mother for 10 years. At the sentencing hearing the judge said that he believed the Maldonados’ accounts of 20 years’ of horrific abuse, but that he couldn’t let them walk away, “because we don’t work that way.”

The film tells this story almost entirely from Wendy and Randy Maldonado’s point of view, but it doesn’t feel one-sided; it’s easy to be convinced, as the judge was, of Ms. Maldonado’s credibility. The bulk of the film takes place in the four days before that April 2006 hearing. (After her conviction Ms. Maldonado was allowed to remain out on bail until her three younger sons’ spring break.) The cameras are inside the house as she packs for prison, bakes cookies, watches home movies and matter-of-factly recounts her husband’s brutal behavior.

The boys describe their father routinely smashing her head into the walls, and photographs show a sickening number of holes. Ms. Maldonado, embarrassed but determined, takes out her dental bridge to show her four remaining teeth.

Both Wendy and Randy Maldonado, who is interviewed in prison, describe a reign of terror in which any attempt to seek help or escape would have led to retribution against other family members. Viewers may wonder about that explanation, and wonder even more about the role of neighbors who say they were aware of the constant beatings and relatives who say they weren’t. But there’s no denying the suffering.

At the hearing the judge says, “Maybe you have an argument to take to the legislature to expand justifiable homicide under the law.” But on this day Wendy Maldonado — having, as she and many others see it, saved her life and the lives of her sons — says goodbye to her family and disappears through a door labeled “Intake.”

Fixing CHKDSK Runs Every Time Computer Boots Up

Don't know the exact reason, but sometimes Windows XP runs the CHKDSK command automatically every time the computer starts. Even if the disk check has finished, it will run again next time the computer boots up. You always have to wait the boot process so you can skip the CHKDSK. If you late a second, the check disk automatically runs and you have to wait longer before you can use the computer. It could be very annoying, especially when you need to use the computer fast.

So, here's the quick fix to the problem.

1. Click on your start menu and open the run dialog.
2. Type "cmd" and return (without the quotes)
3. In the prompt box, type "fsutil dirty query e:" (assuming that the checked drive is e:)
4. If you got message saying "Volume - e: is Dirty" proceed to step 5
5. Type "chkdsk e: /f /x"
6. After checkdisk process finished, repeat step 3.
7. If the message saying "Volume - e: is NOT Dirty" then reboot and you should notice no more
CHKDSK.

Google Phone Strikes! - The No-Carrier GPhone

TechCrunch is reporting based on a range of Tweets and chatter that assert many Google employees were given an unlocked HTC handset running Android 2.1 as a holiday gift. “It’s beautiful . . . Like an iPhone on beautifying steroids” wax the rapturous Tweets.

Rumors of a Google Phone or GPhone were originally reported by TheStreet in late October:

Google is jumping into the smartphone market with an Android phone of its own.

A Google Program Manager writes:
“Stuck in mass of traffic leaving work post last all hands of 2009. ZOMG we had fireworks and we all got the new Google phone. It’s beautiful.”The real killer feature of these phones would be that they are sold open, without a carrier. And, if they have Wifi and VoIP you might be able to *gulp* skip the carrier part of the equation. Or just get a Mifi.

Real shots and specs of the device should be dropping at any moment. It is pretty incredible that nothing has been leaked yet actually. I'll update if I find anything.

In what is likely to be seen as disruptive to the wireless status quo, Google is working with a smartphone manufacturer to have a Google-branded phone available this year through retailers and not through telcos, according to Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar, who has talked to Google’s design partners about the plan.

Google’s Andy Rubin, however, denied that there would be a “Google Phone” — as in hardware:

“We’re not making hardware,” Rubin told CNET. “We’re enabling other people to build hardware.”

Since some version of this rumor appears to be real, we can imagine that there is a phone now with more prominent Google branding and services/software integration. We can also imagine that this phone might be sold directly to consumers (but is it a dual band CDMA/GSM hanset?) rather than through a carrier. TechCrunch speculates it’s a GSM phone (like the iPhone). That would allow it to be used more places in the world.

If the phone were GSM only it wouldn’t be competitive with the Verizon Android phones (Droid, Eris), since Verizon is a CDMA carrier. Sprint is also CDMA, while AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM-based networks.

One issue of course in the unlocked scenario suggested by the rumors would be price. Most smartphones in the US, subsidized by carriers, are now $199 or less. If you buy a smartphone without the subsidy you must typically pay at least $400. That pricing would dampen sales of an unlocked “Google Phone.”

I’m very skeptical of the “iPhone on beautifying steroids” remark. But we’ll see in the next couple weeks I suppose. Now that the handset is “out” pictures and more information will emerge pretty quickly.

According to Nielsen data through Q3 of this year, the iPhone is the top individual handset in the US market. There are no Android handsets on the top 10 list; however next year analysts are predicting roughly 50 (count ‘em) Android devices in the market.

Army Navy Game 2009 Date - Go Army Beat Navy!

This year’s Army-Navy game has looked more like a rivalry than it has in quite some time.

Not only do both teams have a lot at stake, but some words exchanged have fueled what has been a relatively docile fire for more than a decade.

“It’s going to be a real big dogfight because they’re playing for a little bit more this year, but so are we,” Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs said. “And the fact that they’ve been saying stuff in the media, that’s just affirming just how much is on the line.”

What Navy perceives as trash talking is actually a rare showing of confidence from an Army team that has five wins, more wins than it has had since 1996. The Black Knights are a win away from a trip to the EagleBank Bowl, the team’s first bowl since 1996.

Army senior receiver Ali Villanueva guaranteed a win on GoBlackKnights.com. Senior defensive tackle Victor Ugenyi said the senior class is looking to turning the program around after it beats Navy and wins its bowl game. First-year head coach Rich Ellerson said his team expected to win the game.

It’s easy to see why Army’s statements seem a little bold. The Black Knights haven’t beaten Navy since 2001 and have scored more than 20 points just once during the seven-game losing streak. Navy has only scored fewer than 30 once in that time. Navy has defeated Army by an average of 29 points, and last year’s 34-0 shellacking marked the first shutout in the series since 1978.

Navy hasn’t lost to either Army or Air Force since 2002 and has won the Commander-in-Chief Trophy outright for the past six seasons.

“Winning the Commander-in-Chief Trophy is kind of becoming a tradition here and we want to keep the thing rolling,” Dobbs said. “It’s just exciting to have our name as one of the classes to have the most wins against service academies. That’s definitely an honor and something that a lot of guys will want to keep.”

Navy is coming off a difficult loss to Hawaii two weeks ago, but still has its goals intact. Coach Ken Niumatalolo has said many times that Navy strives to win the Commander-in-Chief Trophy and go to a bowl game. The Midshipmen are one win away from their seventh outright Commander-in-Chief Trophy and will face Missouri in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 31.

If the Midshipmen win out, they would have 10 wins, matching their winningest season since 2004.

“We took [the Hawaii loss] to heart and we tried to downplay how bad it hurt,” Dobbs said. “[Niumatalolo] wanted us to just get over it and you know, focus on Army. But in the back of our minds it was just a devastating loss. We’re just thinking about the opportunities that we could have had… We want to get that taste out of our mouths.”

The Keneally Government will go to the 2011 state election from a position of economic strength, with a strong rebound forecast that will push the budget well into surplus next financial year and will allow it to boost its capital spending program by $2.6 billion to $65.5 billion over the coming four years.

"NSW is in pole position to lead the nation's recovery" the Premier, Kristina Keneally, said yesterday. "NSW was hit first, and hit hardest, by the global financial crisis. We are seeing the signs of sustained recovery in the NSW economy".

The Government has moved quickly to capitalise on the forecast upswing by pumping up its capital spending program, putting another $354 million into rail projects, including the clearways program, another $125 million into the Sydney metro and $82 million on more buses, along with the recent revival of the south-west rail link, which is to receive $715 million.

The NSW economy is expected to expand by 1.5 per cent in 2009-10, rather than contract by 0.5 per cent which the Treasury forecast at the time of the state budget. Growth is expected to strengthen to 2.5 per cent for 2010-11 (up from 2.25 per cent forecast earlier) and to run at 3.75 per cent over the following two years.

Similarly, unemployment in NSW will peak at less than 7 per cent, well down from 8.5 per cent forecast midyear.

As a result, the Government is budgeting for a surplus of $872 million for 2010-11, rebounding sharply from the deficit of $1.02 billion expected this financial year, with the surplus to run at $554 million in 2011-12 and $528 million in 2012-13.

If the surplus forecasts are accurate, over the four-year estimates period, which ends in 2013, the combined deficit of $2.35 billion seen for 2007-8 and 2009-10 would be largely wiped out.

''That return to the black is predicated on expense savings that aren't going to happen,'' the Opposition Treasury spokesman, Mike Baird, said. ''There is no discipline whatsoever in the way the Government goes about its business.''

The Government is continuing to struggle to bring expenses under control, with expenses growth now seen to be rising at 4.2 per cent a year over the four-year estimates period, up from 4 per cent in the state budget, with revenues to grow by 4.9 per cent, down from 5 per cent forecast in the budget.

Much of the forecast improvement in tax revenue this financial year will come from the property market, with stamp duty on property transfers to add $520 million to Government coffers. Over the estimates period, payroll tax is now expected to add another $400 million to revenues, thanks to the rebound in employment, with a slight rise also expected in gambling and betting revenues.

A threat to the outlook is the Federal Government's review of the GST split among the states, which is due to be resolved by late February, the Government said.

Reinforcing the Government's economic optimism, the NSW Business Chamber's latest survey found that 36 per cent of businesses reported the NSW economy to be stronger this quarter than the previous quarter.

Mary Jo Coady first noticed the image Sunday when she walked into her daughter's room.

The brownish residue on the bottom of the iron looks like the face of a man with long hair.

The 44-year-old Coady was raised Catholic. She and her two college-age daughters agree that the image looks like Jesus and is proof that "he's listening."

Coady tells The Eagle-Tribune she hopes her story will inspire others during the holidays. She says she plans to keep the iron in a closet and buy a new one.

Defense Official Communicated With WH Crashers

WASHINGTON – The couple who crashed the Obama administration's first state dinner communicated with a senior Pentagon official about going to the event, but the official denies that she helped the couple get in.

Michele Jones, a special assistant to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, said in a written statement issued through the White House on Monday evening that she never said or implied she would get Michaele and Tareq Salahi into the Nov. 24 White House dinner.

"I specifically stated that they did not have tickets and in fact that I did not have the authority to authorize attendance, admittance or access to any part of the evening's activities," Jones said. "Even though I informed them of this, they still decided to come."

This is the latest twist in the unfolding mystery of how the two reality show wannabes managed to get into the highly secured event and shake hands with President Barack Obama. Also on Monday, a House committee chairman asked the couple, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan and White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers to testify at a hearing Thursday on the incident.

The White House issued Jones' statement after questions were raised about communications between the administration and the couple prior to the dinner.

A friend of the couple, McLean, Va., real estate agent Casey Margenau, said in an interview with The Associated Press that the couple interpreted an e-mail exchange as permission to attend the exclusive party. Margenau said he did not personally see the e-mails and did not know with whom the couple was corresponding.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said he wants answers about the Secret Service's security deficiencies that allowed the Salahis to attend the dinner. A White House photo showed the Salahis in the receiving line in the Blue Room with Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in whose honor the dinner was held. Obama and Michaele Salahi are smiling as she grasps his right hand with both of hers and her husband looks on. Singh is to Obama's left.

"This is a time for answers," Thompson said in a statement Monday. "This is not the time for political games or scapegoating to distract our attention from the careful oversight we must apply to the Secret Service and its mission."

Some lawmakers have called for criminal charges to be brought against the couple, but the Secret Service has not yet decided whether to refer the case for criminal prosecution.

The Secret Service declined to comment on whether Sullivan would testify on Thursday.

On Friday, Sullivan issued a statement saying that his agency is "deeply concerned and embarrassed" by the circumstances.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said the couple was not on the approved list for the party, but they were allowed in. "This should not have occurred," Donovan said.

"The preliminary findings of our internal investigation have determined established protocols were not followed at an initial checkpoint, verifying that two individuals were on the guest list," Sullivan said Friday. "Although these individuals went through magnetometers and other levels of screening, they should have been prohibited from entering the event entirely. That failing is ours."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Monday the president shares the Secret Service director's concern about the incident.

"That's why there's an investigation," Gibbs said.

Gibbs said the president was not concerned about his safety and continues to have faith in the Secret Service.

The ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security committee, Rep. Peter King of New York, also said there needs to be an investigation into what happened. King said he wants to be sure the hearing does not give away Secret Service operations or methods that could tip someone off how to get into the White House. King said he's been to at least 40 invitation-only events at the White House — including two state dinners — and security has always been tight and thorough.

The Salahis have boasted about going to the state dinner on their Facebook page: "Honored to be at the White House for the state dinner in honor of India with President Obama and our First Lady!" they wrote.

Michaele Salahi is a reality TV hopeful trying to get on Bravo's "The Real Housewives of D.C."

The couple's publicist, Mahogany Jones, could not immediately be reached for comment about whether the Salahis would testify Thursday. But earlier Monday, Mahogany Jones said allegations that the Salahis are shopping interviews and demanding money from television networks to tell their story are false.

Mahogany Jones said the couple is not making any formal comments or arrangements to speak with the media. An appearance previously scheduled for Monday night on CNN's "Larry King Live" has been canceled.

A TV executive who spoke on condition of anonymity to publicly discuss bookings had told The Associated Press that the couple's representatives had urged networks to "get their bids in" for an interview.

Washington Shooting Re-opens Huckabee's Clemency Record

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – As governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee had a hand pardoning or commuting many more prisoners than his three immediate predecessors combined. Maurice Clemmons, the suspect in Sunday's slaying of four Seattle-area police officers, was among them.

For a politician considering another run for the White House, Clemmons could become Huckabee's Willie Horton.

"In a primary between a law-and-order Republican and him, I think it could definitely be a vulnerability," said Art English, a political scientist at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. "It is very damaging when you have someone like that whose sentence was commuted. That's pretty high profile and very devastating and very tragic."

English said it's hard to avoid comparing the case to Horton, a convicted killer who raped a woman and assaulted her fiance while on release as part of a prison furlough program supported by Michael Dukakis when he was governor of Massachusetts.

Allies of former President George H.W. Bush ran ads criticizing Dukakis for his support of the program, undermining the Democrat's presidential campaign.

As recently as Sunday, hours before the shooting suspect was linked to him, Huckabee said he was leaning against running again for president, telling "Fox News Sunday" he was "less likely rather than more likely" to run.

On Monday, Huckabee offered little explanation for why he made Clemmons eligible for parole in 2000, and called the case a failure of the justice systems in Arkansas and Washington.

"If I could have known nine years ago and could have looked into the future, would I have acted favorably upon the Parole Board's recommendation? Of course not," Huckabee told Fox News Radio on Monday.

Huckabee was expected to discuss the Clemmons case Monday night during an interview with Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Clemmons was among 1,033 people who were pardoned or had their sentences reduced during Huckabee's 10 1/2 years as governor, a number that far surpasses that of his three predecessors combined. Bill Clinton, Frank White and Jim Guy Tucker granted 507 clemencies in the 17 1/2 years they served. Beebe, Huckabee's Democratic successor, has issued 273 commutations and pardons since taking office in January 2007 — all but one of them were pardons after the completion of the inmates' prison terms.

Huckabee's role in gaining the release of a convicted rapist, Wayne DuMond, was the subject of an attack ad during his presidential run. While Huckabee's predecessor, Tucker, reduced DuMond's sentence making him eligible for parole, Huckabee took steps almost immediately after taking office to win DuMond's release.

Two members of the state parole board said Huckabee pressured them to show DuMond mercy, while Huckabee publicly questioned whether DuMond was guilty of the rape of a teenage girl. During the presidential primaries, a conservative group aired television commercials in South Carolina featuring the mother of Carol Sue Shields, whom DuMond killed in 2000 after his release.

Pulaski County Prosecutor Larry Jegley, whose office opposed Clemmons' parole in 2000 and 2004, said Huckabee created a flaw in the Arkansas justice system by freeing the number of prisoners he did.

"(Clemmons) should have stayed locked up like the jury wanted him and we wouldn't even be having this discussion," Jegley said.

"I just have been figuratively holding my breath and hoping something like this wouldn't happen," Jegley said. "I just think that a lot of the people that were subjects of clemency during that period of time were some very dangerous people who didn't need to be let out."

Clemmons also had the backing of Pulaski County Circuit Judge Marion Humphrey, who urged the board to grant clemency. Humphrey later presided over Clemmons' 2004 wedding in his court chambers.

Prosecutors have said Huckabee, a Southern Baptist preacher, was more inclined to release or reduce the sentences of prisoners if he had direct contact with them or was lobbied by those close to him. Clemmons' letter perhaps appealed to Huckabee's Christian faith.

In his application for clemency, Clemmons wrote that he prayed Huckabee would show him compassion and said at the time of his crimes he had just moved to Arkansas from Seattle. Clemmons also wrote that he had changed his life since "the angel of death has visited and taken away my dear sweet mother."

In 1989, Clemmons, then 17, was convicted in Little Rock for aggravated robbery and other charges and sentenced to 95 years. Between 1989 and 1998, Clemmons broke prison rules more than two dozen times — sometimes violently, said state prison system spokeswoman Dina Tyler.

Clemmons didn't stay out long. He was convicted of robbery in Ouachita County in 2001, but was released again in 2004 by the parole board. Little Rock police say Clemmons also faced charges here in 2001 but prosecutors dropped the additional charges when Clemmons was released a second time. Months after his 2004 release, Clemmons was named as a suspect in an aggravated robbery at a hotel in Little Rock but he was not charged.

Saline County Circuit Judge Robert Herzfeld, who as a prosecutor successfully sued Huckabee over clemency practices, said Huckabee's decision to give Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards a pardon for a 1975 traffic offense after meeting him at a concert showed how lightly the ex-governor approached the practice.

"That just said volumes about how he considered this serious ultimate power over freedom as a joke," Herzfeld said.

Spokesman: Suspect in Officers' Death Still Alive

SEATTLE – A sheriff's spokesman says authorities in Washington state believe the man sought in the slaying of four police officers is still alive and has been aided by a network of friends and family.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said Monday night that police have questioned several people who have provided assistance to Maurice Clemmons since the Sunday morning shootings. Troyer says investigators now think Clemmons is on his own.

Officers have said they believe Clemmons was shot in the abdomen during the attack on the officers at a coffee shop in the Tacoma suburb of Lakewood.

Troyer also says police are certain Clemmons was in a Seattle house late Sunday night, but was able to flee before police could contain the area. Police staked out the house overnight before SWAT team members determined early Monday that Clemmons wasn't there.

SEATTLE (AP) — Using search dogs and going door to door, hundreds of police intensified the hunt Monday for the man wanted in the coffeehouse killings of four officers after a SWAT team came up empty-handed in a raid on a house where he was thought to be holed up.

The realization that the suspect had not been cornered after all further rattled people in the Seattle area, many of them unnerved by the thought of a mentally unstable killer in their midst.

Police canvassed the neighborhood around the Seattle house and fanned out across the city, looking for any sign of Maurice Clemmons, 37. Authorities posted a $125,000 reward for information leading to his arrest in the Sunday morning shooting rampage.

The manhunt came as authorities in two states took heat for the fact that Clemmons was allowed to walk the streets despite a teenage crime spree in Arkansas that landed him a 95-year prison sentence. He was released in 2000 after then-Gov. Mike Huckabee commuted his sentence.

"This guy should have never been on the street," said Brian D. Wurts, president of the police union in Lakewood, where all four slain officers worked. "Our elected officials need to find out why these people are out."

Police said they are not sure what prompted Clemmons to assassinate the officers as they worked on their laptop computers at the beginning of their shifts. He was described as increasingly erratic in the past few months and had been arrested earlier this year on charges that he punched a sheriff's deputy in the face.

Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer told the Tacoma News-Tribune that Clemmons indicated the night before the shooting "that he was going to shoot police and watch the news."

Authorities said the gunman singled out the officers and spared employees and other customers at the coffee shop in a suburb about 35 miles south of Seattle. He then fled, but not before he was apparently shot in the torso by one of the dying officers.

Police later learned he may have been holed up at the house in Seattle. After an all-night siege in which they tried to get him out using loudspeakers, explosions and a robot sent into the house, a SWAT team stormed the place and discovered he was not there. Police would not say who lived at the house or whether it was someone Clemmons knew.

It was not clear whether he slipped past police, left before they arrived, or was never in the house at all, but Seattle police spokesman Jeff Kappel said there was evidence Clemmons at one point was on the property. He would not elaborate.

Police spent the day frantically chasing leads, visiting hundreds of locations as they followed up on tips, at one point cordoning off a park where people thought they saw Clemmons. They also alerted hospitals to be on the lookout for a man seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.

University of Washington officials alerted students by e-mail and text messages to an unconfirmed report that Clemmons might have gotten off a bus on or near the campus about three miles from the home.

Investigators also examined the coffee shop for clues. Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Dave McDonald said that authorities found a handgun carried by the killer, along with a pickup truck belonging to the suspect with blood stains inside.

"He was very versed with the weapon," Troyer said earlier. "This wasn't something where the windows were shot up and there were bullets sprayed around the place. The bullets hit their targets."

Killed were Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39, and Officers Ronald Owens, 37, Tina Griswold, 40, and Greg Richards, 42.

Clemmons has an extensive violent criminal history from Arkansas, dating back to his teenage burglary and robbery spree. Huckabee's decision to commute his sentence could create a "Willie Horton" problem for the Republican former governor if he runs for president again in 2012.

During the 1988 White House campaign, Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis was criticized after Horton, a killer serving a life sentence, robbed and raped a woman while on a weekend furlough from prison.

On Sunday, Huckabee issued this statement on his Web site: "Should he be found to be responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington state."

In seeking leniency from Huckabee, Clemmons wrote the parole board that he was a "misguided fool" when he committed the crimes and "learned through the school of hard knocks to appreciate and respect the rights of others."

Huckabee cited Clemmons' youth in granting the request. But Clemmons quickly reverted to his criminal past, violated his parole and was returned to prison. He was released again in 2004.

Clemmons was charged in Washington state earlier this year with assaulting a police officer and raping a child, and investigators in the sex case said he was motivated by visions that he was Jesus Christ and that the world was on the verge of the apocalypse. But he was released from jail after posting bail with the assistance of Jail Sucks Bail Bonds.

Documents related to those charges indicate a volatile personality. In one instance, he is accused of punching a sheriff's deputy in the face. In another, he is accused of gathering his wife and young relatives and forcing them to undress.

"The whole time Clemmons kept saying things like trust him, the world is going to end soon, and that he was Jesus," a Pierce County sheriff's report said.

Neighbors said Clemmons had surveillance cameras installed along the bushes in front of his house, and had mostly kept his blinds shut since he was accused of throwing rocks through the windows of his neighbors' cars and houses earlier this year.

Neighbor Ken Dietiker said he initially thought Clemmons' cameras were there to prevent crime. "But now I'm starting to think he's just paranoid," he said.

Dietiker said he was frustrated to learn about Clemmons' record and releases from custody.

"There were all these indicators. Who didn't see them?" he asked. "That's what I want to know."

Suspect in Washington Police Murders Could Haunt Mike Huckabee

The murder of four police officers in Washington on Sunday cast a pall on the nation's Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and now there's a political controversy brewing over the the main suspect in the killings. Investigators have named former Arkansas prison inmate Maurice Clemmons their primary suspect. Clemmons was released nine years ago after being granted clemency by then-governor and former GOP presidential-candidate hopeful Mike Huckabee. Huckabee now faces questions about that decision, which could damage his standing as a prospective Republican presidential nominee.

Huckabee commuted Clemmons' 1989 conviction for aggravated burglary and theft of property in 2000, citing the fact that Clemmons was only 17 at the time of the crimes. Clemmons, however, violated his parole and was returned to prison in Arkansas, where he remained until 2004. Just six days ago, he was released from a Washington jail on bail after being arrested several months ago for second-degree rape of a child and assaulting a police officer.

Huckabee distanced himself from Clemmons' release in a statement last night, arguing that the commutation was not the final word:

He was recommended for and received a commutation of his original sentence from 1990. This commutation making him parole eligible and was paroled by the parole board once they determined he met the conditions at that time. He was arrested later for parole violation and taken back to prison to serve his full term, but prosecutors dropped the charges that would have held him.

He went further today on Fox News Radio, saying: ''If I could've known nine years ago, looked into the future, would I have acted favorably upon the parole board's recommendation? Of course not."

Though he's been coy about possible future political ambitions, Huckabee is frequently mentioned as a contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination and remains popular among conservatives. A recent poll of Republican voters conducted by The Washington Post found him trailing only Sarah Palin as the party's favorite candidate for the presidency in 2012. The conservative voters who dominate Republican primary contests, however, frown on anything less than a hard line when it comes to so-called "law and order" issues.

In fact, this line of attack has been used on Huckabee before. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney criticized Huckabee throughout 2007 for his role in the release of convicted murderer and rapist Wayne DuMond. DuMond was released from an Arkansas prison in 1999, only to rape and murder another woman. Romney and Arkansas parole officials claimed Huckabee had played a central role in securing DuMond's release. Huckabee denies it.

The DuMond case haunted Huckabee during his attempt to secure the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. Some dubbed it "Huckabee's Willie Horton" in reference to the clemency case that dogged Michael Dukakis during the 1988 presidential campaign.

If Clemmons is found and convicted of this quadruple murder, the same thing could happen to Huckabee's attempts to win the nomination in 2012.

For now, however, Clemmons is keeping authorities on edge.

Obama to Detail Big Troop Increase in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON – After months of debate, President Barack Obama will spell out a costly Afghanistan war expansion to a skeptical public Tuesday night, coupling an infusion of as many as 35,000 more troops with a vow that there will be no endless U.S. commitment. His first orders have already been made: at least one group of Marines who will be in place by Christmas.

Obama has said that he prefers "not to hand off anything to the next president" and that his strategy will "put us on a path toward ending the war." But he doesn't plan to give any more exact timetable than that Tuesday night.

The president will end his 92-day review of the war with a nationally broadcast address in which he will lay out his revamped strategy from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He spent part of Monday briefing foreign allies in a series of private meetings and phone calls.

Before Obama's call to Britain's Gordon Brown, the prime minister announced that 500 more U.K. troops would arrive in southern Afghanistan next month — making a British total of about 10,000 in the country. And French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose nation has more than 3,000 in Afghanistan, said French troops would stay "as long as necessary" to stabilize the country.

Obama's war escalation includes sending 30,000 to 35,000 more American forces into Afghanistan in a graduated deployment over the next year, on top of the 71,000 already there. There also will be a fresh focus on training Afghan forces to take over the fight and allow the Americans to leave.

He also will deliver a deeper explanation of why he believes the U.S. must continue to fight more than eight years after the war was started following the Sept. 11 attacks by al-Qaida terrorists based in Afghanistan. He will emphasize that Afghan security forces need more time, more schooling and more U.S. combat backup to be up to the job on their own, and he will make tougher demands on the governments of Pakistan as well as Afghanistan.

"This is not an open-ended commitment," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said. "We are there to partner with the Afghans, to train the Afghan national security forces, the army and the police so that they can provide security for their country and wage a battle against an unpopular insurgency."

On a few of the bigger questions most on the minds of increasingly restive members of Congress and the public, such as how much the additional $30 billion to $35 billion cost will balloon the already skyrocketed federal deficit, how long the U.S. commitment will continue and how it will wind down, Obama was expected to make references without offering specifics.

Gibbs said detailed discussions on costs would be held later with lawmakers.

Even before explaining his decision, Obama told the military to begin executing the force increases. The commander in chief gave the deployment orders Sunday night, during an Oval Office meeting in which he told key military and White House advisers of his final decision.

At least one group of Marines is expected to deploy within two or three weeks of Obama's announcement and will be in Afghanistan by Christmas, military officials said. Larger deployments will begin early next year.

The initial infusion is a recognition by the administration that something tangible needs to happen quickly, officials said. The immediate addition of Marines will provide badly needed reinforcements for those fighting against Taliban gains in the southern Helmand province, and also could lend reassurance to both Afghans and a war-weary U.S. public.

Obama's overall review was launched Aug. 31, when Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, then the newly minted top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, delivered to Pentagon brass his assessment of the situation on the ground and what was needed to turn it around. McChrystal produced a separate resource request, first seen by Obama on Oct. 1. The president's review was anchored by 10 extensive war council meetings, starting on Sept. 13, that featured a debate between a counterinsurgency strategy focused on protecting the local population and building up the Afghanistan government or a more limited counterterrorism strategy.

The final product is neither, though it leans more toward counterinsurgency.

The length of the process drew sharp barbs. Less than two months in, Vice President Dick Cheney accused Obama of "dithering," beginning a drumbeat of criticism from Republicans. The White House shot back that the administration Cheney helped lead had given inordinate attention to Iraq while turning its back on Afghanistan.

But with U.S. casualties in Afghanistan sharply increasing and little sign of progress, the war Obama once liked to call one "of necessity," not choice, has grown less popular with the public and within his own Democratic Party. In recent days, leading Democrats have talked of setting tough conditions on deeper U.S. involvement, or even staging outright opposition.

The displeasure on both sides of the aisle is likely to be on display when congressional hearings on Obama's strategy get under way later in the week on Capitol Hill.

Obama spent much of Monday and Tuesday on the phone, outlining his plan — minus many specifics — for the leaders of France, Britain, Germany, Russia, China, India, Denmark, Poland and others. He also met in person at the White House with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

A briefing for dozens of lawmakers was planned for Tuesday afternoon, just before Obama left for New York to give his speech against a military backdrop.

He also was to call Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari — two leaders on whom the success of the plan will depend heavily.

In Afghanistan, rampant government corruption and inefficiency have made U.S. success much harder. Obama was expected to place tough conditions on Karzai's government, along with endorsing a stepped-up training program for the Afghan armed forces in line with recommendations this fall by U.S. trainers.

That schedule would expand the Afghan army to 134,000 troops by next fall, three years earlier than once envisioned.

The president faces a tricker task in talking tough on Pakistan.

Though extremist fighters and al-Qaida leaders are believed to be based in its western region near the border with Afghanistan, public scoldings from Washington can hurt as well as help Pakistani efforts because of pervasive anti-American sentiment. The U.S. cannot send troops into Pakistan, and rarely discusses the anti-terrorist missile strikes conducted inside Pakistan from U.S. drones.

Military officials said the speech is expected to include several references to Iraq, where the United States still has more than 100,000 troops. The strain of maintaining that overseas war machine has stretched the Army and Marine Corps and limited Obama's options.

He is expected to at least implicitly pledge not to return to the worst days of the Iraq war, when the Army was resorted to 15-month tours with little time at home between deployments and when National Guard and reserve troops were subjected to lengthy tours.

World's Largest Atom Smasher Breaks Power Record

The world's largest atom smasher broke the world record for proton acceleration Monday, firing particle beams with 20 percent more power than the American lab that previously held the record.

The power of the Large Hadron Collider's proton beams is essential to the project's ultimate goal: smashing particles into each other with enough force to shatter them into the smallest building blocks of matter.

The early-morning test continues a recent sequence of successes that have elated scientists who were disappointed by the $10 billion machine's collapse last year during its opening in a 17-mile (27-kilometer) tunnel under the Swiss-French border. The breakdown required extensive repairs and improvements.

The collider fired two particle beams at 1.18 trillion electron volts early Monday, surpassing the previous high of 0.98 1 TeV held by the Chicago-area Fermilab since 2001, according to the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

Physicists measure the energy of the hair's-width beams, not their speed, because the protons are already traveling close to the speed of light and cannot go much faster.

One proton at 1 TeV is about the energy of the motion of a flying mosquito. When a beam is fully packed with 300,000 billion protons with 7 TeV energy — the goal of the LHC — it is like an aircraft carrier traveling at 20 knots. That is why the scientists are carefully learning how to run it and make sure all protection systems are working, said James Gillies, spokesman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

The power level reached Monday isn't significantly higher than Fermilab's. More significant advances are expected during the first half of next year when the LHC plans to raise each beam to 3.5 TeV in preparation for experiments create conditions like those 1 trillionth to 2 trillionths of a second after the Big Bang.

Physicists hope that will help them understand suspected phenomena such as dark matter, antimatter and supersymmetry and, ultimately, the creation of the universe billions of years ago.

CERN Director-General Rolf Heuer said the early advances have been "fantastic."

"However, we are continuing to take it step by step, and there is still a lot to do before we start physics in 2010," he said. "I'm keeping my champagne on ice until then."

It may take several years before the LHC will in theory be able to detect the elusive Higgs boson, the particle or field believed to give mass to other particles. The discovery would rank among the greatest in physics.

Physicists have used smaller, room-temperature colliders for decades to study the atom. They once thought protons and neutrons were the smallest components of the atom's nucleus, but the colliders showed that they are made of quarks and gluons and that there are other forces and particles.

The LHC operates at nearly absolute zero temperature, colder than outer space, which allows some 2,000 superconducting magnets to guide the protons most efficiently.

More than 8,000 physicists from labs around the world also have work planned for the Large Hadron Collider. The organization is run by its 20 European member nations, with support from other countries, including observers from Japan, India, Russia and the United States, which have made big contributions.
