Poveglia Island History, Is It Haunted?

It's an interesting story that circulating around Poveglia Island history, saying that the island is haunted. Many people believe, but many people don't. However, with such a dark history, no wonder some so many ghost stories are spreading around about Poveglia Island.

Poveglia is a small island located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon, Italy. A small canal divides the island into two parts.

During Roman times it was used to isolate thousands of plague victims, and during the three occasions when the Black Death spread through Europe, the island was effectively used as a lazaretto and plague pit—it was considered an efficient way of keeping the infected people separated from the healthy. It is believed that over 160,000 people died on the island throughout its history.[citation needed]

The island was home to a small community until it was abandoned around 1380, during the War of Chioggia between Venice and Genoa. In 1922, a mental hospital was built on the island. Local lore states that a particular mental health doctor tortured and killed many of the patients, before going "mad" and jumping to his death from a bell tower.[citation needed] According to that same legend, he survived the fall, but was 'strangled by a mist that came up from the ground'. Its ruins remain to this day.

Today, the island is used for farming (primarily vineyards) and is not open to tourists. It has been featured on the show Scariest Places On Earth. The island is said to be haunted. In fact, Ghost Adventures, hosted by Zak Bagans, filmed an episode at the island which originally aired on November 13, 2009.

Annie the Movie

Annie the Movie is a 1982 musical film based upon the 1977 stage musical of the same name, with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and the book by Thomas Meehan. It was released in 1982 by Columbia Pictures.

The film version was directed by John Huston, and starred Carol Burnett, Albert Finney, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters, Geoffrey Holder and Aileen Quinn. This was Huston's only film musical.

The producer of the film, Ray Stark, wanted both John Huston as director and Joe Layton as choreographer and executive producer to work on the film, because it was too large an enterprise for one person. Carol Sobieski (the screenwriter) said: "Hiring John [Huston] is an outsider risk, and Ray's [Stark] a major gambler. He loves this kind of high risk situation."

It was planned that the staging for the song "Easy Street", with Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, and Bernadette Peters, would be the biggest number in the film. A special outdoor street set, costing $1 million, was built, and it took over one week to shoot the scene. However, the final number was thought to be "overstuffed" and "sour". Nearly two months after the film had finished shooting, a new, indoor more intimate number was shot.

The production filmed for 6 weeks at Monmouth University in New Jersey, which had two mansions that were used in the film.

There were major differences between the stage musical and the film. The film featured four new songs, "Dumb Dog", "Let's Go to the Movies" (which replaced "N.Y.C."), "Sign" and "We Got Annie", and cut "We'd like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover", "N.Y.C" (replaced by "Let's Go To The Movies"), "You Won't Be an Orphan for Long", "Something Was Missing", "Annie" and "A New Deal for Christmas". In addition, the song "Maybe" has 2 reprises while "Little Girls" and "Easy Street" do not.

In the stage musical, Hannigan, Rooster and Lily are caught at the Warbucks estate, thus not kidnapping Annie. In the movie, she is kidnapped, leading to Warbucks organizing a city-wide search and while escaping, Rooster chases her up the B&O Bridge. Eventually, Punjab rescues Annie by autocopter and returns her safely at the end. Miss Hannigan's heart softens and she also attempts to rescue Annie from being killed by Rooster but he knocks her out and continues chasing Annie. When Punjab saves Annie from Rooster, he kicks Rooster off the bridge where he lands on a mat being held by the police and Hannigan beats him with her purse for hitting her and kidnapping Annie. Miss Hannigan is shown joining in the celebration at the end of the movie and possibly showing a romantic interest in Punjab.

The scene used for the "Maybe" song was actually the last scene filmed for the movie, because the original opening was too long. Although the "Maybe" song was still used, Annie and Molly are sitting at the window; however, this scene was still inserted into the film, only the last part with the rest of the orphans singing, after the "Little Girls" scene and the scene with Rooster and Lily's entry, during Annie's first night at the Warbucks estate.

Punjab and The Asp, Warbucks' servants/bodyguards from the comic strip, are brought back for this film as supporting roles.

Christoper Craft, Pine Plains Central High School District Gunman Arrested

Police had finally taken down the Gunman who hide in the Stissing Mountain High and Middle school with hostage in his hand. Now the Gunman whom identified by some sources as Christoper Craft, is now in Police custody.

The Police had worked hard in order to evacuate the students and applying plans to arrest the Christoper Craft. Bob Hess, the Headmaster of the Middle School who was also been hostaged, was released unharmed.

Christoper Craft is a resident of Pine Plains, and believed as a parent of one of the student. There are still no explanation or motives for his armed action.

Lamont, a resident of Pine Plains said that there are no gun shot.

Current situation in Pine Plains Central High School District is safe, and all the students had met their parents.

Cannot Login to Digg.com

At November 7 2009, 04.00 AM PST, I can't access the login page of Digg.com. I've tried for about 30 minutes but it still shows error message. Until this post was wrote, I still cannot access the login page on Digg.com.

I'm not sure about what caused the problem. Maybe it's with my internet connection, but I've tried login to other sites, login to my email, and even login to Blogger.com and there's no problem. I also have tried using different browser to access Digg.com login page. I used Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome, but the problem still exist. I assume the problem is with Digg.com site, but I'll wait until there's explanation from Digg.com.

National Unemployment Rate Stands at 17.5% and Rising

The National unemployment trend keep growing like crazy. Almost multiplied by three times since October 2006. The percentage goes higher and higher following the Great Economic Recession that hit the world's financial a few years ago.

For all the pain caused by the Great Recession, the job market still was not in as bad shape as it had been during the depths of the early 1980s recession — until now.

With the release of the jobs report on Friday, the broadest measure of unemployment and underemployment tracked by the Labor Department has reached its highest level in decades. If statistics went back so far, the measure would almost certainly be at its highest level since the Great Depression.

In all, more than one out of every six workers — 17.5 percent — were unemployed or underemployed in October. The previous recorded high was 17.1 percent, in December 1982.

This includes the officially unemployed, who have looked for work in the last four weeks. It also includes discouraged workers, who have looked in the past year, as well as millions of part-time workers who want to be working full time.

The official jobless rate — 10.2 percent in October, up from 9.8 percent in September — remains lower than the early 1980s peak of 10.8 percent.

The rate is highest today, sometimes 20 percent, in states that had big housing bubbles, like California and Arizona, or that have large manufacturing sectors, like Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island and South Carolina.

The new benchmark is a sign of just how much damage financial crises tend to inflict. A recent book by Carmen M. Reinhart and Kenneth S. Rogoff, two economists, found that over the last century the typical crisis had caused the jobless rate in the country where it occurred to rise for almost five years. By that standard, the jobless rate here would continue rising for two more years, through the end of 2011.

Most economists predict that the rate will in fact begin to fall next year, largely because of the federal government’s aggressive response — fiscal stimulus, interest-rate cuts and a variety of creative steps by the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department. Friday’s report showed that monthly job losses continued to slow recently, though the improvement has been gradual.

At the White House Friday, President Obama signed a bill to extend unemployment benefits and a tax credit for home buyers, and said that he was looking at ways to enact more stimulus. On Wednesday, the Fed announced that it expected to leave its benchmark interest at zero for “an extended period.”

Nearly 16 million people are now unemployed and more than seven million jobs have been lost since late 2007.

Officially, the Labor Department’s broad measure of unemployment goes back only to 1994. But early this year, with the help of economists at the department, The New York Times created a version that estimates it going back to 1970. If such a measure were available for the Depression, it probably would have exceeded 30 percent.

Compared with the early 1980s, a smaller share of workers today are officially unemployed and a smaller share are considered discouraged workers.

But there are many more people who would like to be working full time and have been able to find only part-time work, according to the government’s monthly survey of workers. The rapid increase in their ranks and in the officially unemployed has caused the rate to rise much faster in this recession than in the early 1980s. Two years ago, it was only 8.2 percent.

One of the more striking aspects of the Great Recession is that most of its impact has fallen on a relatively narrow group of workers. This is evident primarily in two ways.

First, the number of people who have experienced any unemployment is surprisingly low, given the severity of the recession. The pace of layoffs has increased, but the peak layoff rate this year was the same as it was during the 2001 recession, which was a fairly mild downturn. The main reason that the unemployment rate has soared is the hiring rate has plummeted.

So fewer workers than might be expected have lost their jobs. But those without work are paying a steep price, because finding a new job is extremely difficult.

Second, wages have continued to rise for most people who still have jobs. The average hourly wage for rank-and-file workers, who make up about four-fifths of the work force, actually accelerated in October, according to the new report.

Even though some companies have cut the pay of workers, the average hourly wage has still risen 1.5 to 2.5 percent over the last year, depending on which government survey is examined. Average weekly pay has risen less — zero to 1 percent — because hours have been cut. But average prices have fallen. Altogether, the typical worker has received a 1 to 2 percent inflation-adjusted raise over the last year.

In the other two severe recessions in recent decades, workers with jobs fared considerably worse. At the same point in the mid-1970s downturn, real weekly pay had fallen 7 percent; in the early 1980s recession, it had fallen 4 percent.

It is a strange combination: workers who still have a job are doing better than in other deep recessions, but the unemployment and underemployment have risen to their highest level since the Depression.

Prophecy of Doom 2012

It is one's choice to believe a prophecy or not. For me, science is make sense, while prophecy is a bit hard to accept. But a prophecy seems to be related to science. Astronomers had calculated a number of great event that might happened in 2012. Collision between Earth and Nibiru is one of them.

If a prophecy can really be calculated with science, then human might have the technology to prevent it. Prophecy only tells that a massive disaster will happened on Earth. This is by no means the end of the world.

Yankees NYC Parade

The New York Yankees has brought an honor and joy to their fans by winning their 27th World Series Championship, 2009.

For the first time since 2000 The Yankees return to the Canyon of Heroes on Friday morning, when they will float up Broadway in a ticker-tape parade and share their 27th World Series victory with fans in Lower Manhattan.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. at Battery Park Place and will proceed north on Broadway to Chambers Street. The parade should end at 1 p.m. at City Hall Park, where Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will give the Yankees the keys to the city.

There are 500 tickets available for public seating at the ceremony.

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today, fans can apply for the tickets, the mayor’s office announced. There three ways to enter the random drawing: call 311, log on to the parade Web site or access the form through the Mayor’s office Twitter page.

Fans can enter only once and request two tickets; they must provide their name, e-mail address and phone number.

Winners of the ticket giveaway will be notified when and where to pick up their tickets; they must present photo identification and be screened by security. According to the mayor’s office, those selected to attend the ceremony will likely not be able to attend the parade because they must arrive early to be seated in City Hall Plaza.

The mayor’s office isn’t the only group giving away tickets. City Council members and other elected officials, as well as community organizations that work the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, will also distribute some tickets.

It's Big Bird s Birthday! Good Old Days with Sesame Street

Today is the Big Bird's birthday and Sesame Street celebrates its 40th Anniversary. Hmm... so that's why the Google logo changed to a bird foot. It took me a while to realize the meaning. But before that, my friend got some 'experience' with the Google Big Bird Logo today.

This morning when my friend uses my computer to open Google, he surprised. "Why is the logo different? Is it the real Google site?" he asked me and check the URL in the browser. I almost spitted my coffee upon hearing his question.

He might be seen different Google logo for the first time. But even for me, or those who already know that Google always changed the logo if there's an event, still asking the meaning of the yellow bird foot. I think I can recognize the foot. It seems familiar. After pointing my mouse over the picture, the box in the picture above comes out tells that today is the 40th Anniversary of Sesame Street and the logo is the foot of the Big Bird. Yay,I'm flashing back to my childhood times. I watched Sesame Street when I was a kid and it took more than twenty years to know the Big Bird's birthday.

Nicolas Cage blames his financial advisor for his financial ruin. In a lawsuit filed Oct. 16 in Los Angeles, the National Treasure star, 45, claims that his longtime business manager, Samuel J. Levin, "lined his [own] pockets with several million dollars in business management fees while sending Cage down a path toward financial ruin."

Over the summer, the IRS quietly placed a tax lien of nearly $6.26 million on Cage's New Orleans properties after the actor flat-out failed to pay income taxes in 2007 (the same year, incidentally, that he raked in some serious back-end profits from Ghost Rider and National Treasure: Book of Secrets).

As if that weren't bad enough, the IRS obtained a second lien over yet more unpaid taxes, this time for income earned between 2002 and 2004. That lien, as the New Orleans Times-Picayune first reported back in August, was for an additional $360,545.84.

Not surprisingly, Cage put two of his properties on the market this spring and was forced to sell off one of his many castles. The recession hits hard, folks. Still, where's Jerry Bruckheimer when you really need him?

The results came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This, turned many young people's attention to Air Traffic Control School wondering where they can get that education.

Universities normally don't have Air Traffic Schools or programs. It is managed by FAA. The job of the Air Traffic Controller requires a special type of FAA schooling and on the job training.

Air Traffic Controllers may receive up to $117,200 dollars yearly. The median salary is between $86,860-142,210. This is in addition to good benefits.

However, the job is stressful. This is why Air Traffic Controllers retire at 50 years. The watch the lives of hundreds or thousands of air passengers and it indeed ban be stressful.

FAA has approved school for Air Traffic Controllers, called Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) Schools. Some are the Aviation Department of the Aims Community College, Department of Aeronautical Management Technology at the Arizona State University, or Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in Flushing, NY.

The question still go unanswered as the crime scene investigation suggest that the positions showed Robin Bain could quite easily reach the trigger, Boyce said, who added his arm span was shorter than that of Robin Bain.

A suicide demonstration of how the incident might happened was done to reconstruct the event. For the demonstration he donned a special skull cap, which has a rod attached to mimic the trajectory of the bullet through Robin's head.

Shown photographs of Robin Bain's body in the lounge of the Bain house, Boyce said the position of Robin's body was quite consistent with the various suicide positions he had already demonstrated. The same was true about where the rifle was found, he said.

He said Robin's head wound was more likely than not to have been inflicted with the rifle against his temple or very close to it. The percentage of firearm suicides which displayed close contact wounds meant the bullet wound was likely to have been self inflicted, he said.

Boyce said he had conducted a number of tests to show that someone could kill themselves using the rifle and sustain the same wound trajectory as Robin Bain. He used a colleague as a model and had him stand in different poses to ensure he could reach the trigger.
