Tips For Safer Internet Browsing

There’s a joke said that WWW doesn’t stand for World Wide Web, but it’s an abbreviation from World Wild Web. It’s only a joke, but it can be true. The Internet is a wild world where everyone can freely do anything they desire. Spreading virus, capturing other people’s passwords and use it for harmful purpose, post anything they like, and might also breaking into somebody else computer.

For the last point, it’s not always happened because of the weakness of the victim. Most of computer breaking activities was caused by a flaw in the software used by the victim. Attacker simply exploited the flaw in the software security to gain access to the computer where it’s installed. That’s why it’s very important to keep your software up-to-date, quickly patched when there’s a flaw in its security. James write an in-depth view about software security. He’s describing clearly about the risk faced by internet users when using unsecure software and why it is critical that software security is constantly monitored.

From all the technical things to defend against malicious attack, users must also defend himself by doing the right thing. I got some tips to make your Internet journey a little bit safer.

Always use a trusted browser

There are many browsers, but only few of them can be trusted. Personally I like Firefox, because it has so many plug-ins. But be careful, plug-ins can be one of the backdoor for malicious attempt. If you are a Firefox user, make sure you only use plug-ins certified by Mozilla. The best browser in the term of safety is Google Chrome by Google. It has been proven to be three times harder to exploit than other browsers.

Disable your Javascript for unknown sites

Javascript is commonly used features to make web page looks beautiful. But the usage is not limited to that. It also can be used to make a fake web page looks exactly the same as the real site, or to make you automatically download a malicious program. Disable your Javascript from your browser setting makes you safe from this type of attack, but some sites like Gmail or Facebook won’t work well without Javascript.

Never trust a link given through Messenger or E-mail

Sometimes your friend gives you a link. The words on the link might be tempted and interesting. But, do not immediately assume that it’s from your friend. It could be from a computer virus affecting your friend's computer, which automatically sends the link. Confirm with your friend first.

Attachment is also a threat

Be careful with attachment in your inbox. Same as the link from Messenger/E-mail, attachment can also be sent automatically by a virus.

Take advantage of SSL/HTTPS

SSL/HTTPS is an encrypted tunnel so the data sent through won’t be easily captured and read by someone else. Be careful when accessing your mailbox from unencrypted hot-spot, someone else might capture and read your emails.

802.11 Standardization

Is there anyone today dare to say that he’s unfamiliar with wireless? Television, radio, cell phones, remote control, alarm, cordless phone, XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 controller, are just small part of the wireless technology.

It’s true that wireless can’t replace every cable in the world, such as electric cable (no wireless power or wireless electricity generator so you will still need cable or battery to get electricity) but the benefit of wireless is indeed, undoubtly.

Wireless technology is very suitable to replace mouse cables, Local Area Network cable and even Wide Area Netwok. The wireless technology implemented for each of them is different, depends on the distance it covers.

Roughly, the stronger a wireless device is, the bigger distance it can cover, and the bigger power it will need as well. You don’t want your cell phone to run out of battery in one minute after you activated the wireless network right? You also don’t want your wireless mouse designed bigger than a coconut.

While I learn about networking, feels like there’s no other standardization more confusing than wireless network’s standardization. At first, I thought that the wireless protocol standardization 802.11a must be the first standardization, followed by 802.11b, and the last one, 802.11g, must be the latest. A very wrong thought!

There’s an article about the 802.11 standard and its variations by Donald Maurer. It explains the standardization of the 802.11 wireless technology and its details. Which is the first standardization of wireless network technology? Which is the fastest? What are the pros and cons for each of the standardization? There’s also a comparison between wireless network and wired Ethernet network.

Why there should be standardization?

For a technology used massively, standardization is a must to avoid incompatibility of different vendors’ technology. Different hardware vendors can work together. You won’t be happy when your laptop’s wireless can only be connected to the same brand. Also, additional hardware vendors can make compatible accessories for every brand, based on the standardization.

Terminator Salvation 2009

In 2003, Dr. Serena Kogan (Helena Bonham Carter) of Cyberdyne Systems convinces death row inmate Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) to sign his body over for medical research following his execution by lethal injection. One year later, the Skynet system is activated, perceives humans as a threat to its own existence, and eradicates much of humanity in the event known as Judgment Day (see Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines). In 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale) leads an attack by the Resistance on a Skynet base. John discovers human prisoners and the plans for the development of a new type of Terminator incorporating living tissue, but is the only apparent survivor of the attack after the base is destroyed in a nuclear explosion. However, Marcus emerges from the wreckage of the base and proceeds on foot to Los Angeles.

John returns to Resistance headquarters located aboard a nuclear submarine and tells General Ashdown (Michael Ironside), the current leader, of his discovery. Meanwhile, the Resistance has discovered a radio frequency capable of shutting down Skynet machines. They plan to launch an offensive against the Skynet base in San Francisco in four days, in response to an intercepted "kill list" indicating that Skynet plans to kill the Resistance's command staff in four days' time. John learns that his own name is second on the list, following Kyle Reese. The Resistance leaders are unaware of Kyle's importance to Skynet, but John knows that it is because Kyle will later become his father (see The Terminator). John meets with his officer Barnes (Common) and wife Kate (Bryce Dallas Howard) and sends radio broadcasts to Resistance members and surviving civilians around the world.

Arriving in the ruins of Los Angeles, Marcus is saved from a T-600 Terminator by Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) and his mute companion Star (Jadagrace Berry). Kyle relates to Marcus the events of Judgment Day and the ensuing war between humans and machines. Hearing John's radio broadcast, the three leave Los Angeles in search of the Resistance. They survive an attack by machines, but Kyle, Star, and several other humans are taken prisoner, while a pair of Resistance A-10s are shot down. Marcus locates downed pilot Blair Williams (Moon Bloodgood) and they make their way to John's base, but Marcus is wounded by a magnetic land mine. Attempting to save his life, the Resistance fighters discover that he is in fact a cyborg with human organs, a mechanical endoskeleton, circuitry, and a partially artificial cerebral cortex. Marcus believes himself to be human, demanding to be released so that he can save Kyle from Skynet, but John orders his destruction. However, Blair releases him and helps him to escape from the base. During the resulting pursuit Marcus saves John's life from Skynet hydrobots, and the two form an allianceMarcus will enter Skynet's headquarters and attempt to disable its defenses so that John can rescue Kyle.

John demands that Ashdown delay the attack so that he can rescue Kyle and the other prisoners, but Ashdown refuses and relieves John of his command. However, John's soldiers remain loyal to him and he sends a radio broadcast asking the other Resistance fighters not to attack Skynet. Meanwhile, Marcus enters the Skynet base and interfaces with the computer, disabling the perimeter defenses and allowing John to infiltrate the cell block and release the human prisoners. The Resistance's disabling signal is revealed to be a ruse, and the command submarine with the Resistance leaders aboard is destroyed by a Hunter-Killer.

Marcus discovers that he was created by Skynet and has unwittingly fulfilled his programmed mission to lure John into the base to be killed. He tears out the hardware linking him to Skynet and leaves to assist John in battling a T-800 model 101 Terminator. John is mortally wounded during the fight, but succeeds in destroying the Skynet base by rigging several Terminator nuclear power cells to an explosive, detonating them as he, Marcus, Kyle, and Star are airlifted out. Kate attempts to save John's life, but his heart is too damaged. Marcus offers his heart for transplant, sacrificing himself to save John. Recovering, John radios to the other Resistance fighters that though this battle has been won, the war is far from over.

Angels and Demons (2009) DVDRip XviD

Under the watchful eye of Father Silvano Bentivoglio and Dr. Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), the CERN scientists start the Large Hadron Collider and manage to capture three vials of antimatter. Immediately afterward, someone kills Father Silvano, and uses his retina to break into the containment room to steal one vial of anti-matter.

In Rome, the Vatican mourns the passing of the Pope. The Vatican staff prepares for the Conclave of the College of Cardinals, which will select the next Pope. Until the Conclave selects a new Pope, the Camerlengo (Ewan McGregor) assumes day-to-day control of the Vatican. Reporters, nuns, priests and other faithful all crowd into St. Peter's Square, waiting for the white smoke from the Conclave. But the Illuminati, a 400-year old, underground secret society, kidnaps the four most likely candidates (preferratti) before the Conclave goes into seclusion. The Illuminati threatens to kill them at 8, 9, 10 and 11 PM, and then destroy the Vatican in a burst of light at midnight. A video feed shows the missing anti-matter vial, which will destroy the Vatican and parts of nearby Rome when the magnetic containment field fails.

The Vatican summons Drs. Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and Vittoria Vetra from CERN to help them solve the Illuminati's threat, save the four preferratti, and replace the vial vial's batteries. Langdon listens to the Illuminati message and deduces that the four cardinals will die at the four alters of the Path of Illumination. However, no one knows where these alters are located. Vetra demands the Swiss Guard fly Father Silvano's diaries from Switzerland. They hope he wrote down the name of whomever he discussed the CERN experiment. Langdon demands access to the Vatican Library (something he has requested 10 times already) to see the original copy of Galileo's banned book. Using the clue from this book, Langdon, Vetra, and Lieutenant Valenti (Victor Alfieri) of the Vatican police race to the first church, only to find the body of the first Cardinal, branded with the word, Earth (in English!). They find the direction of the church with the seond Illuminati alter, but arrive in time to see the next Cardinal die, branded with the word Air. Langdon locates the third church with the third Illuminati altar, but tries to save the third Cardinal from burning to death, while the assassin kills the Vatican policemen. He convinces the Rome police to race to the last church of the Water alter, and manages to save the last Cardinal. However, location of the last Illuminati altar remains in question.

When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret scientific society known as the Illuminati - the most powerful underground organization in history - he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization's most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he jets to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. Embarking on a nonstop, action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra will follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican's only hope for survival.

Angels and Demons was the reclusive authors third novel after he gave up his job as an English teacher. It tells the story of Langdons brush with a shadowy secret society, the Illuminati, and his frantic quest for the worlds most powerful energy source, in the company of a beautiful Italian physicist whose father, a brilliant physicist, has been murdered.

The team behind the global phenomenon "The Da Vinci Code" returns for the highly anticipated "Angels & Demons," based upon the bestselling novel by Dan Brown. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals. Ron Howard again directs the film, which is produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and John Calley. The screenplay is by David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman.

It is Ron Howard's excellence in directing such films as "A Beautiful Mind" that make this film so superb. It also lies in the simple things that keep characters like Hanks true to life, with his wearing of a simple Mickey Mouse watch, much like the truth to Russell Crowe playing John Nash in "A Beautiful Mind" and admitting to "taking the newer medications." Howard is excellent in depicting the simplicity of complexity and complex issues.

Web Directory To Boost Traffic

Starting a new site on the internet is like entering a boundless jungle. You are there, but no one knows you. You sit and wait but no one visit your site. Of course, no one ever heard of your site. You can't earn money when your site has no traffic. You have to promote your site to make it exposed to the world. Only when it's done, you will get traffic and start earning money. Sounds easy. True, site promotion can be easy, yet can be very frustrating.

One way to promote your site to the world is to submit it to the search engines. However, it may take hours, weeks, or even monthly to get listed in the search engine. At the time you get listed, still you have to face a tough competition in the search result.

Fortunately, there is an easier way to "tell the world of your existence". It is by getting your site listed in the web directory. Web directory is not a search engine. The difference is, search engines use keyword to link to site, while web directories use categories and subcategories. This categories are not determined by keyword or a specific page of the site. It's more determined by the topics of your whole site. You can't get listed on every categories on the web directory, even though your site covers a wide range of topics. Web directories also important to boost your site's rank in search engine result page because they give backlinks to your homepage. There are many paid directories with high PageRank who list sites based on the highest amount they paid. Of course this is not an option for everyone. Free web directory also have the same advantage.

Other differences of search engines and web directories, is bot usage. Search engine uses crawler bot to index sites, while web directories are human edited. When submitting your site to web directories, make sure you choose the most accurate category for it. An editor will review all the submissions and reject sites with wrong categories.

Make sure to read the directory's rules and instruction carefully. Write your site title and description accurately, and never use all-capital letters. Web directories list sites alphabetically, so if you want to include your site's keywords, use the on that start with letter near to the beginning of the alphabet.

The best option to start with are DMOZ and Yahoo Directory. But remember, they are the best human-edited directories. They review every submission manually to make the result accurate.

British Telecommunications Company Refuses Interest Based Ads

Concerned about their internet users privacy, the British telecommunications company, BT Group stated that it would never adopt the technology that gives advertisers space to drive their consumers based on the interest revealed by the history of their internet use - Monday, 6/7/2009.

The news was the latest in a series of setbacks for Phorm, the company that developed the technology, causing its stock to plunge more than 40 percent.

Phorm’s approach has been hailed by advocates as a way to improve the effectiveness of advertising. But the technology has raised concerns because it mines actual data supplied by Internet service providers, rather than building consumer profiles from partial Web browsing patterns, something that many Web companies already do.

Though Phorm says its system renders the data anonymous and has safeguards against security breaches, privacy advocates claimed vindication in the decision by BT.

“It’s a huge victory for privacy,” said Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, a civil liberties organization based in London.

BT said it was discontinuing use of Phorm because of budget limitations caused by investments in other technology, not because of privacy concerns.

“We continue to believe the interest-based advertising category offers major benefits for consumers and publishers alike,” BT said in a statement. “However, given our public commitment to developing next-generation broadband and television services in the U.K., we have decided to weigh up the balance of resources devoted to other opportunities.”

Phorm said it continued to “look forward to creating the conditions necessary for British I.S.P.’s to move to deployment” but added that it was focusing on “faster-moving overseas opportunities.” Among other markets, the company has been testing its system in South Korea.

Britain is not the only place where such behavioral targeting has raised concerns. In the United States, Congress has been studying the issue, with privacy advocates calling for new rules to govern advertisers’ use of ad-tailoring systems, not just the kind employed by Phorm.

In an effort to head off legislation, American advertising trade organizations published principles last week by which they aimed to regulate behavioral monitoring programs. Under the guidelines, which the groups hope to have in place by early next year, advertisers would disclose which ads involved the use of behavioral tracking, and consumers would be given the chance to opt out.
